Mary Lawler: Easy Street E.P. With Julietta Hay, Ned Doherty, and John Stuart (2023)

A Reunion of Friends and Bandmates That Gives a Snapshot of Mary the Rocker

7 Songs; 22:14 Duration

After her “Sings Songs From The Mary Lawler Songbook” project in which she documented 39 of her songs with only acoustic guitar and vocal, Mary Lawler is back with a rocking set accompanied by an electric band. Mary brought in three friends from The Dead Sailor Girls to help lay down muscular versions of seven of her originals. Although there were no rehearsals and the players hadn't performed together in years, never fear, due to their many prior collaborations, each musician brought along a working knowledge of (and plenty of enthusiasm for) Mary's repertoire. It took only a single afternoon in 2022 to record the instrumental tracks and scratch vocals at Jim Hyden's San Francisco home studio--no fuss and no overdubs. Then Mary returned once or twice in the ensuing months and re-recorded some vocals. Julietta Hay's vocal on “No Feeling Old” is from the original session.

Fun Facts for Discerning Listeners

Mary Lawler played and sang in The Urge, one of the first all-girl punk/new wave bands on the San Francisco scene of the late 70's and early 80's. The Urge's classic “Bit By Bit” single is available on Mary's bandcamp.

Julietta Hay performed together with Mary in The Outskirts, another all-girl band on the same scene in the mid-80's.

In the late 80's Mary recorded an album of her songs, “Tree House”, with Hector Peñalosa of The Zeros and Flying Color fame. "Tree House" was unreleased at the time but is now available on Mary's bandcamp.

John Stuart performed with Hector in Flying Color and has worked with Chris von Sneidern, Barbara Manning, The Cat Heads, and others.

Ned Doherty played and recorded along side Mary and John in the group Cold Picnic in the 90's. Ned has been a part of Carmaig De Forest's DeathGrooveLoveParty, Mushroom, and other notable Bay Area groups.

Jim Hyden played drums with Mary and Julietta in the mid-80's as part of a short-lived formation called The Von Trapp Family Singers.

Today Julietta, Ned, and John along with Eve Hay and Greg Ingraham (from Avengers) work as The Dead Sailor Girls.
